Now you all country dwellers would know what I mean. It doesn't smell like summer today. More like early autumn. Had that nagging feeling all this morning and again in the early evening. I think ya'll might wanta get ready for an early frost. I can tell winter will be early this year by the changes in the sumac trees. It's usually late aug before they turn like I've seen them today. The berry patches ain't got nothing but Jaggers, no fruit early or late depending on which berry your looking for.
Preps are getting tougher as I'm now paying retail for about anything I'm stocking. I took the last 4 of the six dollar carbon arrows at wallyworld today. I also bought out all the 150 grain bullet points and the last 2 packs of bodkin points. I keep one of the heavy bows strung at all times now and the rest is ready to move in minutes. I'm practicing morning and evening with all the bows. When it comes time to make a critical shot with one I won't miss. I finished making adjustments to the ghilli suit, It blends much better into the terrain now.
A buddy and myself are playing with building a little deck gun from schedule 80 steam pipe. We had a steam fitter weld up all the joins and we proofed it by filling it to the muzzle crown and touchin it off. Hello, What a wakeup. Ain't quite sure how I'll finish it now. I think I'll do it all ship shape though. No ghetto rigging for this little gun.
I think I'll put in a word for backwoodsman magazine here. If you don't have their best of the Backwoodsman series yet on your bookshelf. I think your really missing out, Bad even.
Here's a link to their Mercantile. Loads of good stuff there.

I would like to know your honest opinion on the accuracy of your observations concerning an early Winter. Is it valid? Is it for real? Is it a figment of your thoughts on the lack of solar flares on the Sun? Tell me as accurately as you can. This is a severe point of survivalism.
Your other stuff looks gooda as hell. A deck gun! Probably just as good or better than a Claymore. That ought to give the freebooters some cause to hesitate!

I watch the animals and the tree's...
The maples are looking like they did last aug...Droopy leaves looking about to turn...
the sumacs are further along than normal... I watch the sumacs alot, they are a good source for tea. "The red fruit spikes of the 'Staghorn Sumac' create a wonderful brew." Native tech.
Cattails are in advanced stages too.
I watch the animals alot too...
Jack my husky is getting his winter coat early.
Personal observation's is that "I feel" cooler. The morning sky looks like autumn.
The daily highs are still warm, but the evening lows are cooler by ten or so degrees.
Do I feel accurate? yep, enuff to get some straw for an early frost for the garden.
for the record, I've felt the weather was off for some time and went looking for a cause. not that I read about the minimum and then went looking for some "proof". I'll put up good money behind what i feel. but, not what I read.
My gut is telling me to figure out how much firewood I need and then up it by a third.
Always go with yer gut! Here's another "weird" weather observation: hurricane Dolly was an oddball. Usually these early storms stay low and go into Mexico. It's very unusual for one to come this far north in July! August and September is our "busy season" on the northern Gulf.
I'm also watching the deer for a sign of an early rut. They've already got nearly full grown antlers. Seems early for that....
