It remains to be seen if this level of activity will continue.
That it did so right after solstice I find amusing.
There are those tha believe as do I that this is a good omen.
Solar cycle 24 while quiet has spots with an activity level
that have to be seen to be believed. I expect lots of CME,
Prominence and flare activity.

Summary: The nature of this event is uncertain--indeed, it might be more than one event. Around 9 pm on Dec. 16th, sky watchers in southeast Nebraska saw a brilliant fireball streak across the sky. It was so bright that observers with overcast skies saw it shining through clouds. Telephones in news stations and police departments rang with reports of bright lights, loud sounds, and ground shaking. Minutes earlier, around 8:53 pm CST, the USGS says there was a magnitude 3.5 earthquake in southeastern Nebraska:

Earthquakes in Nebraska are rare, so what are the odds of one happening within minutes of a meteoritic fireball? This might be a cosmic coincidence. Or there could be some yet-to-be-explained linkage between the events. Readers with photos or eyewitness reports are invited to submit them here.

INCOMING CME: This morning at 0120 UT, an eruption of magnetic fields around sunspot 1035 produced a long-duration C4-class solar flare and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) in the general direction of Earth. High-latitude sky watchers should prepare for auroras when the CME arrives on or about Dec. 18th. STEREO movies: solar flare, CME.
BIG NEW SUNSPOT: New sunspot 1035 is growing rapidly and it is now seven times wider than Earth. This makes it an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. Yesterday, Rogerio Marcon of Campinas, Brazil, photographed a maelstrom of hot plasma and magnetic filaments connecting the sunspot's dark cores:

"Solar activity is picking up," he says.
The magnetic polarity of the spot identifies it as a member of Solar Cycle 24--the cycle we've been waiting for to end the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century. One spot isn't enough to end the lull, but sunspot 1035 could herald bigger things to come. Stay tuned for updates.

I know I've been quiet lately, but I haven't
been motivated to write for some time.
Looking back over the posts of the past year last night,
I was surprised to see how much I got right or nearly so.
As the yuletide approaches and our days begin to lengthen,
I want to wish each and everyone of you godspeed.
I hope you are all well with a good stack of firewood,
plenty of food and niceties.
I have asked Santa to bring me a deuce this year or a
winning cash five ticket, but so far he hasn't cooperated.
This past year has been sheer and utter Hell.
The Jeep is dead until I get it resurrected this spring.
And the economy has been so bad that I have been living
off the preps I put away. But I have been living and
that is a positive sign. Jobs are way hard to come by and
No-one pays reasonable wages anymore. I'm expecting
further slides early this spring so plan those gardens and
plan well. The Times we prepared for are almost upon us.

I'm no denier when it comes to climate change. I have been saying that the "warming" folks were wrong from the getgo. I'm not against being green. Matter of fact, I'm all for green solutions. We will all be better off if some of the better green ideas catch on. Garden and compost, even take some off your appliances off the grid. Maybe even apply the Hunnert Mile rule to foods you purchase and consume. Where's the bad in that? Won't You or I be better off?

If You are just now waking up to the fact that you are being lied to. Good Morning! But, don't be throwing the green baby out with the rubbish. And don't allow those fools to make Carbon laws or taxes.

A different kind of Internet post

Kidding. it's just rare to see people say they were dead wrong, I know that. I was wrong. Believe me, I'm probably less likely to write that than most of you. Always feeling I am correct is a huge character flaw, but things have changed, and I was dead wrong.
For years, I had enough sense, and that's what I saw it as ... "sense", to lean toward the side of the scientific community in regard to AGW (climate change). Let me preface by saying I'm not a "denier", and I sure as hell wasn't skeptical. If anything I was pissed libertarians spent so much time siding with "cranks". That's the problem here ... and a lot of people aren't getting that not only is a failure to adequately address the problems hurting their cause ... if they keep it up, they'll drag down the wider field of "science". This new minimum is indeed looking like the Dalton minimum.
Almost but not quite a carbon copy right down to Vulcanism and earth quakes.
I'll even go out on a limb here and predict a NEO or Asteroid type impact event tween now and 2016. The type I'm predicting is a rogue event with time of discovery to impact at or near minutes maybe hours... This is in fact a no brainer as we are moving through a thicker debris field. This may in fact have to do some with a Jovian effect as ole Jupe is heading to its midwinter orbital position.
As far as impact events go. I expect them to be minimal events not ELE's.
We get peppered all the time by the small stuff as any star gazer can tell you. But, We are overdue for some of the bigger stuff. Think Flagstaff kinda impacts. That particular impact was small and the result of Plasma as the rock detonated quite high in the air. It also came straight in towards the ground at a near vertical angle as it's symmetrical impact crater suggests. The type of event I'm suggesting is survivable as long as you are not in the near or immediate vicinity.
I'm also expecting at least a partial grid malfunction due to increased Solar events. Also between now and 2016. The current events have been few and far between, but when they do occur, they are Way Active. We do live in interesting times. Dragon out.

Deep Solar Minimum Continues: Solar Minima is historically associated with cooler temps world wide. Ref: Dalton, Maunder, and Sporer minimums. The current minimum is sometimes referred to as the (Sic), Gore minimum. Well the current minimum is now starting to look very much like the Dalton. Hey Al, In case ya didn't get the memo, That means cooling. Way cooling. The Big Show from now till 2016 is in the Sky. Particular interesting is the periods between the autumnal equinox and the spring equinoxes. We should witness several new meteor events as we move into a winter orbit that also coincides with a particularly interesting close approach of jupiter making it's winter run. Jupiter orbits our sun once about every 15 years. Sunspot cycles also occur at or near the same 15 year cycle.

researchers thought the sunspot cycle had hit bottom in 2008
when the sun was blank 73% of the time. Not so. 2009 is on
the verge of going even lower. So far this year, the sun has
been blank 75% of the time, and only a serious outbreak of
sunspots over the next few weeks will prevent 2009 from becoming

GREAT FIREBALL: A remarkable midnight fireball that "turned night into day" over parts of the western United States last night was not a Leonid. Infrasound measurements suggest a sporadic asteroid not associated with the Leonid debris stream. ...The space rock exploded in the atmosphere with an energy equivalent to 0.5 - 1 kilotons of TNT. Approximately 6 hours later, observers in Utah and Colorado witnessed a twisting iridescent-blue cloud in the dawn sky. Debris from the fireball should have dissipated by that time, but the cloud remains unexplained; we cannot yet rule out a connection to the fireball event. In other areas, I've finally got the jeep back home and accessed the flood damage to it. Right now it's a toss up between bringing it back up to snuff or parting it out. It's worth more as parts than what I paid for it.
Another factor is, that I may have a line on a 6x6 multi-fuel which would make the Jeep expendable.
In other news, I'm exercising my right of choice to opt out of the whole health care deal. Yes, I do know that there is no opt out clause. But, to try to send me to jail for not having insurance is unconstitutional.

I see the symptoms of collapse are accelerating all around. I hope you have noticed and not got caught up in the latest bread and circuses.
The economy is shit and work that pays is hard to find.

The last coffin nails are being driven in "Gorbal Warming" this spring as cooler temps continue. Politicians should rethink the Carbon Tax as an already pissed folks are not going to stand for more shit. That may get you a cig and a blindfold chum. It's time to fly the flag upside down. Ya'll know what I've been predicting and We are going to witness it soon. Hell, I might be able to give you about a 72 hour heads up, but that's about it. Rethink the bugout time table, NOW! before it's needed. Ya'll sea level people might want to think about getting about a hundred feet higher also. Oh well, thats all I have time for now.

FARSIDE EXPLOSION: On Nov. 5th, something exploded on the far side of the sun. The blast hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) over the sun's limb, recorded by coronagraphs on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). Click on the image to launch a 14-hour time lapse movie:

The source of the eruption is probably sunspot 1029, which is transiting the far side of the sun. Last week, when sunspot 1029 was visible from Earth, it quickly grew into the biggest and most active sunspot of the year, unleashing ten C-class solar flares in just a few days. Apparently, the action hasn't stopped. The sun's rotation will turn the sunspot back toward Earth about a week from now. If the sunspot holds together that long, we could experience some solar activity. Stay tuned.
ASTEROID NEAR MISS: On Nov. 6th at 2132 UT, asteroid 2009 VA barely missed Earth when it flew just 14,000 km above the planet's surface.Clarke Belt" of geosynchronous satellites. That's well inside the " If it had hit, the ~6-meter wide space rock would have disintegrated in the atmosphere as a spectacular fireball, causing no significant damage to the ground. 2009 VA was discovered just 15 hours before closest approach by astronomers working at the Catalina Sky Survey.
MAGNETIC FILAMENT: Today, amateur astronomers are monitoring a picturesque magnetic filament looping around the western limb of the sun. Jan Timmermans sends this picture from his backyard observatory in Valkenswaard, The Netherlands:

The portion of the filament seen in front of the sun looks dark, because it is cooler than the inferno below. But note how the filament glows in projection against the black space beyond the limb. The glow comes from plasma trapped inside the filament--not as bright as the surface of the sun, but definitely brighter than the void.

"The image clearly shows that the only difference between a 'dark' filament and a 'bright' prominence is where they are located: inside or outside the solar disk," notes Timmermans. (diagram)

So why can't we see any of it?
Almost none of the drama of Solar Maximum is visible to the human eye. Look at the sun in the noontime sky and—ho-hum—it's the same old bland ball of bright light.
"The problem is, human eyes are tuned to the wrong wavelength," explains Tom Woods, a solar physicist at the University of Colorado in Boulder. "If you want to get a good look at solar activity, you need to look in the EUV."

INDONESIAN ASTEROID: Earlier this month, with no warning, a ~10-meter wide asteroid hit Earth's atmosphere above Indonesia and exploded. The break-up was so powerful, it triggered nuclear test ban sensors thousands of kilometers away. A just-released analysis of infrasound data shows that the asteroid detonated with an energy equivalent of about 50 kton of TNT, similar to a small atomic bomb. METEORS FROM HALLEY'S COMET: Earth is entering a stream of dusty debris from Halley's Comet, and this is causing the annual Orionid meteor shower. If forecasters are correct, the shower will peak on Wednesday morning, Oct. 21st, with dozens of meteors per hour. The best time to look is during the dark hours before local dawn.

For the past three years, Orionid rates have been unusually high, with reports of 60 or more meteors per hour. Researchers believe this is a result of some very old and rich debris from Comet Halley drifting across Earth's orbit.
